Frank Watson Wood was born in Berwick-on-Tweed and studied at the Berwick School of Art and Académie Julian. He was head-master of the White School of Art 1889-1899 and moved to Portsmouth accepting commissions from naval officers for portraits of their ships. He worked closely with William Wyllie and John Lavery and joined them aboard the Grand Fleet flagship, H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth to paint the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet in 1918.
