Lot Essay

One of the foremost animaliers during the second half of the nineteenth century, Auguste-Nicolas Cain was undoubtedly influenced by the work of his father-in-law, Pierre-Jules Mene, Cain was at his most masterful when modelling realistic and expressive portraits of particular animals.
