Lot Essay
This chair is associated with the marble parlour suite provided for Houghton Hall, Norfolk, in the 1730's.
The 'compassio' seat, S-scrolled uprights and shell-centred escutcheon are shared with the parlour chair, previously in the Percival D. Griffiths Collection and now in the Noel Terry Collection, illustrated in P. Brown, The Noel Terry Collection, 1987, p.49. The present lot relates very closely, and was possibly en suite with the walnut settee and the mahogany flap-table also from the Percival D. Griffith Collection, both illustrated in Herbert Cescinksy, English Furniture of the 18th Century, p.23 and p.31.
What appear to be further side chairs from this suite were sold in these Rooms, 24 April 1980, lot 37 (from the Montagu Meyer Collection), and 25 June 1981, lot 25.
This armchair appears to form part of a suite of seat-furniture in the Percival Griffiths Collection, illustrated H. Cescinsky, English Furniture of the 18th Century, circa 1920, p. 23; and P. Brown, The Noel Terry Collection, 1987, p. 49. It relates to 'eagle' armed and footed chairs with scallop-shell carving, supplied to Houghton Hall, Norfolk, in the 1730's (see: J. Cornforth, 'Houghton Hall', Country Life, 7 May 1987, fig. 10
