Lot Essay

This chair is particularly close to the design of the Barlow Hall suite, discussed by J. F. Hayward, 'An English suite of furniture with embroidered covers, Connoisseur, vol. CLV, 1964 pp. 147-149, and sold in these Rooms, 22 November 1962, lot 38. An armchair of this pattern was also sold in these Rooms, 29 November 1979, lot 86. Two suites at Petworth House, Sussex have similar rockwork-centred seatrails.
