The subject of Perseus and Andromeda, taken from Ovid's Metamorphos (4:665-739), was the sort of subject that Haydon would be naturally drawin to Perseus, flying overhead, fell in love with Andromeda, the daughter of an Ethiopian King who had been chained to a rock on the seashore as a sacrifice to the sea monster. Perseus fought the monster and rescued Andromeda.
