Fleur de Lys was the newer of the tow racing schooners depicted above and was built at Bath, Maine, in 1890 for Mr George Trotter. Phantom by comparison, was a much earlier boat and had been built in New York for Henry S. Parmelee in 1865. She was one of the group of American keel schooners which defended the first challenge to the America's Cup in 1870 and although she did not reach the final heats in which Magic defeated the British challenger Cambria, Phantom nevertheless aquitted herself well by coming fifth in the preliminary races.
