The title for this painting is a quotation from Professor J.C. Beaglehole, The Journals of Captain James Cook, The Voyage of the Resolution and Adventure 1772-1775 published by the Haklyut Society 1969. The painting is taken from an extract from the log of Richard Pickergills third lieutenant of the Resolution, "being by this means stopped from going further south, we stood along the edge of the ice to the eastward endeavouring to find a passage through but could not".

The artisit says of the painting: 'It is approximately 6.30-7.00am Resolution and Adventure under courses topsails and staysails set. The wind is in a westerly direction. This painting is an attempt to reconstruct how this scene may possibly have looked from natures point of view, as man first intrudes into this virgin unknown world. In the foreground a group of chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis Antarctic) are resting on a small ice flow watching with curiosity, as these two strange objects that pass by.
