Ranger was nicknamed 'The Super J' and she was the largest of her class ever built. She was a Burgess-Stephens design and was owned by Harold S. Vanderbuilt. She was also the last J-Class yacht to be built. She was constructed entirely of steel at the Bath Ironworks in Maine and was 135 feet overall. She was launched in May 1935. In 1937 she won the America's Cup against Tony Sopwith's Endeavour II.
