When Malevich joined the Vitebsk Art Labov Co-operative in 1919 he had already contributed several lithographs to many fine futurist publications. However, the mood of the country and of modern Russian art was changing very quickly.
With the onset of war the heroes of avant-gardism - Laronov, Goncharova, Kruchenykh and Burlich - consciously left the vanguard. With the publication of on New Systems in Art Malevich revealed the radical art of the new age of Russian modernism. Suprematism not futurism, rayonism or primivitism would provide the artistic language of the new Russia. A non-objective language of line, form and pirity of colour. In Lissitzky, Rodchenko and Stepanova, Malevich found willing allies who would assimilate and develop the theories expounded in On New Systems in Art and late Unovis publications.
