These unusual figures appear to be from the Taranaki area where an idiosyncratic style of carving developed after European contact. Two figures similar to our larger figure were acquired by the British Museum in 1895 from Miss Meinertzhagen and were collected by her father, a sheep farmer in the Hawkes Bay area, who returned to England in 1881. The figures would therefore appear to date from the second half of the 19th century
