Details
Blandy's Madeira--Vintage 1792
Early 3-part moulded bottle. Damaged wax capsule. Remains of label only: part of 'BLANDY Madeira (17)92-(1840)' decipherable. However from size, age and type, this is the very rare original 'bottle ticket', measuring 1 7/8 x 3 1/4in - one of the oldest wine labels known.
1792 is the most famous of all Madeira vintages. Napoleon took a pipe of it when calling at Funchal in August 1815 en route for St. Helena. It was not consumed, the pipe being returned to Funchal after Napoleon's death, acquired by Charles Blandy and finally bottled by his son, John, in 1840
