Lot Essay

This drawing dates from the artist's stay in Paris from 1768-71, before leaving France for England. Clérisseau found it difficult to make a living in Paris, and according to Mariette his drawings of ruins, such as the present one, were bought by the English. This may well have prompted Clérisseau to cross the Channel
