Lot Essay

Don Juan (Don Giovanni) of Austria (1545-1578), was the natural son of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V. Raised secretly by a trusted friend of his father's, the young Don Juan was later recognized by his half-brother Philip II, and went on to a career as a brilliant general in Philip's service. Noted for his ambition, charm and physical beauty, Don Juan died in mysterious circumstances, and is now generally thought to have been poisoned. His reputation survives today, not as a military genius, but as the celebrated lover.
