The bust of the young boy is a copy of a 3rd Century AD Roman bust of Saloninus as a child. The Antique is now at Petworth, where it was acquired in the early 19th Century. A copy, circa 1820, is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Jones Bequest 1185-1882). The present finely carved example is of further interest in that it has been paired with the bust of a similar young girl, also after the Antique.
