etching, 1636, first state (of three), an exceptionally fine, rich impression, with excellent contrasts, with the dirty background in the blank area above characteristic of the earliest impressions, the vertical scratch through Rembrandt's hand clear and distinct, the foul-biting beneath the brim of the hat barely noticeable, with thread margins or trimmed on the platemark, a tiny inclusion on Rembrandt's collar, traces of minor staining at the reverse sheet edges, generally in excellent condition
