Lot Essay

Probably drawn in the Anichkov Palace, in the top left is Count Joseph Potocki and in the top right General Svetchin. In the third part of the drawing, Count Ribeaupierre, the Prince of Hesse Darmstadt, the Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna and the Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna are to be seen, the Tsarevich is dancing on the right. Behind the dancers are visible Princess Helen of Mecklenburg and Countess Stroganov. Near the door the Empress and Emperor are seated, at the Empress' side is the Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich. The Grand Duke of Hesse, the Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich and the Grand Duke Vladimir stand behind them. The late Alexander Benois suggested that the present watercolour may have belonged to the Grand Duke of Darmstadt.
We are grateful to the Galerie Popoff for the above information.
