Lot Essay

A French boarded coffer in the Victoria and Albert Museum (circ. 62-1909) has almost identical stylised linenfold panels to the front and sides. The masssive dovetail construction is similar to a roughly contemporary Flemish coffer in the same museum (W.12-1945). Photographs of these coffers are offered with this lot.

An oak coffer with similar linenfold in the Musée de Graville, Seine-Maritime, is illustrated J. Boccador, Le Mobilier Français du Moyen Age à la Renaissance, 1988, p. 26
