A very similar empire bergère was sold in these Rooms 29 November, 1990, lot 130.

The shape and decoration of this chair derives from two designs illustrated in C. Percier and P.F.L. Fontaine, Recueil des Décorations Intérieures, Paris, 1812. Plate XV shows a chair with similarly decorated and shaped back made by Jacob Frères for the bedroom of 'Citizen V'. in Paris. Likewise the design of the base is similar to that of a chair illustrated in plate LX.
