According to de Bruyn, loc. cit., the present picture was considered by Professor W. R. Valentiner to be a sketch by Rubens made in connection with his decorations for the triumphal entry of the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand into Antwerp in 1635. It was identified as a studio work by Professor Julius Held and Jacques Foucart, who suggested the name of Quellinus, an attribution which is fully endorsed by de Bruyn.
De Bruyn dates the painting to 1636/7 when Quellinus was assisting Rubens with the series of canvasses for the Torre della Parada, comparing it in particular with 'The Rape of Europa' and 'The Death of Eurydice' (his nos.17 and 19), both executed from sketches by Rubens
