Lot Essay
The artist was born in Delft and, after a visit to Italy before 1625, is recorded in Delft from 1627 until he left for The Hague in 1647. For other mythological subjects by him, see J. The depiction of Adonis in the present picture has the character of a self-portrait. The landscape and still-life appear to be the work of other hands, the latter possibly Christoffel van den Berghe (active 1617-1642 or later)
