Lot Essay

An important but characteristic example of Davis's innocent, child-like vision, the picture is apparently indebted to Holman Hunt's Light of the World; indeed it was given this title in the Maas Gallery and Fine Art Society catalogues. A drawing in the British Museum (1953-9-24-9) may be a preliminary study
