The initials may be those of Solomon J. Solomon without the 'J' which he added to his name early in life (adopting his father's name of Joseph) to save any confusion with the disreputable Simeon Solomon. He was, however, signing his R.A. pictures 'Solomon J. Solomon' by 1885
