New Court was built 1825-31 to designs by Rickman and Hutchinson. Placed on a site across the river from the existing parts of the College, it was the largest single building that any college had yet erected. As the picture shows, the style is New-Gothic, with borrowings from Wilkins's King College screen of 1824, but the symmetrical design with projecting wings is unashamedly classical. Notable features include the Bridge of Sighs (seen on the left), connecting the new building with Third Court, and the Wedding Cake, a glazed lantern with flying buttresses and pinnacles, which contributes so much to what Pevsner calls the 'fairy skyline'.
