The style of the painting with the fluid and naturalistic rendering of the composition, and the manner in which the flesh tones of the face are achieved by the application of fine brush strokes of ochre over a reddish ground, this would indicate a 13th Century date for the panel.

The icon should be compared with a group of 13th Century panels in St. Catherines Monastery, Mount Sinai. (See K. Manafis, Sinai: Treasures of the Monastery of Saint Catherine, (Athens, 1990), pp.170-191.) In particular an icon of the Archangel Michael, ascribed to the early 13th Century (No.41, p.170).
