The cartoon for this figure (Catalogue number BJ401) was drawn for the East Window of St. Martin's Church, Brampton, Cumbria (1880). Both the church and the windows were commissioned by George Howard (later Earl of Carlisle), a friend and patron of both Morris and Burne-Jones. Originally drawn with the Virgin's head turned to the viewer's right, it was not uncommon, as here, to adapt a design to shew the head turned to the left.
