Lot Essay

Samuel James Bouverie Haydon (1815-1891) was born in Exeter, and originally trained to be a lawyer before studying sculpture under E.H. Bailly. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1840 and 1876, specializing in both historicizing groups and portrait busts.
