Lot Essay

Stephan Abel Sinding (1846-1922) was born in Norway and died in Paris. He studied under A. Wolff in Berlin, subsequently spent a year in Rome, and finally returned to Scandinavia. He exhibited regularly, including works in the Expositions in Paris, and winning the Grand Prix at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Several of his sculptures are in the Museum in Copenhagen and Oslo. The present vigorous equestrian figure illustrates the Wagnerian heroine Brunhilda.
