Lot Essay

The design of this table is inspired by the tea or work-table of 'Guadalupe' wood supplied by Chippendale to SIr Lawrence Durdas in 1764 for No. 19 Arlington Street. The distinctive scrolled foot is also found on a group of similar but plainer tables supplied by Chippendale circa 1770 for the lodging rooms at Harewood House (see: C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, 1978, vol.II, figs. 469 and 470). An unprovenanced 18th Century table is at Temple Newsam (C. Gilbert, Catalogue, vol. II, no.459).
