Lot Essay

This mirrored console-table, designed to accompany a pier-glass, reflects the George IV 'antique' style, as published in the Cabinet-Makers and Upholsterer's Guide, 1826, by George Smith, who had served as 'Upholder' to George IV, when Prince of Wales. Its Roman acanthus foliage has been applied to the type of grecian scrolled leg, illustrated in Thomas Hope and adapted from Percier and Fontaine.
