Lot Essay
The scallop-edged 'tray' top, relating to that of George II silver salvers, is accompanied by an unusual raised fillet with fluted 'columnar' and inner scalloped section framing a central compartment, which may indicate its use as a 'wassail' or drinking table for punch bowl and glasses. Amongst related tripod 'claw' tables is one in the Victora and Albert Museum (W22-1962) and another, displaying the royal crown of George II accompanied by 'roman' acanthus buds alternating with scallop-shell badges of Venus, goddess of Love (R.A. Lee advertisement, Connoisseur, June 1952). Such furniture, inlaid with brass in the French manner was a speciality of John Channon (d.c.1783), the fashionable St Martin's Lane cabinet-maker in the reign of George II.
