Lot Essay

A very similar cabinet, lacking the two top low cupboard doors, was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 23 January 1976, lot 114 (illustrated). Another, with later grilles in the upper section, was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 2 December 1977, lot 115 (illustrated). It is interesting that Holland and Sons were producing walnut writing-cabinets of the same overall shape in the late 1860's (see: R. W. Symonds and B. B. Whineray, Victorian Furniture, London, 1962, pls. 140 & 141)
