It is typical of Robert Mondavi that in order to perfect his Pinot Noir he spent a decade experimenting with vineyard sites, specialised stock, clonal selection, vine density, canopy managment and severely reduced yields - not to mention new equipment designed to cope with this fickle grape variety. By 1986 Mondavi was able to produce an unfiltered Pinot Noir Reserve followed by vintages also uncentrifuged and unfined. The last two vintages released have been judged "The Best Pinot Noirs of America" in the prestigious American Wine Competion
