It is fine wine's destiny to compliment fine food.
Of all the major wine competitions, the Sydney Internationl is unique inasmuch as it is the only one where, category by category, the judging of the top awards is carried out in conjunction with appropriately matching food. The top wines are "food wines" of excellence that relate to the table, not merely to a panel of professional tasters in a show judging situation.
Now in its eleventh year, the Competition started as a dinner to which selected, high quality, premium wine producers were invited to submit wines to accompany the different courses of a formal dinner which was to be held in Sydney in their honour. Now an annual event, the dinner remains at its centre; the wine competition has grown around it. This year's Competition attracted 810 entries from more than 200 winemakers in nine, mainly "New World" wine producing countries.
Eliminations are made in the traditional way; entries are divided into varietal categories and the wines are assessed by six senior and highly experienced judges in two panels of three using the 20-point system and awarding gold and silver medals to the highest scorers.
In 1992, there were 120 Gold and Silver medallists. all faultless wines of very high quality. The judges then divided these wines into ten "Style Categories", according to their weight, palate, intensity and type. Next, each group of wines was judged again, by the same judges, but this time with small courses of food, appropriate to the wines' style category. In this way, the list is reduced to the "Top 100", out of which the Category Winners and the Air New Zealand "Best Wine of Competition" are selected.
Too close to separate, there are, in fact, 106 wines in the consignment airfreighted to London. The majority of the wines are from the classic and new wine districts of South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia. A third of them are not: New Zealand has placed no less than 25 wines in the "Top 100"; California, South Africa, Chile are also represented.
Whilst the names of the 1992 "Top 100" have now (just) been announced, the Category Winners and the Air New Zealand "Best Wine of Competition" will not be revealed until the "Awards Wine Tasting Dinner", to be held in Sydney on 3 May.
What is guaranteed, however, is that the overall winners are included in this consignment of 106 bottles, representing the best, the crème de la crème, of the 1992 Competition, now sold in aid of "The Benevolent".
