Lot Essay

Grand Duke Mikhail Mikhailovich (1861-1929) son of Grand Duke Mikhail (1832-1909), 4th son of Tsar Nikolai I.
He married morganatically on 26th February 1891, Sophia, Countess de Torby (1868-1927), daughter of Prince Nikolas Wilhelm of Nassau (1832-1905), by his wife Natalia dughter of the poet Pushkin. He left two daughters, Zia, wife of Sir Harold Wernher, Bt. of Luton Hoo Park, and Nada, wife of George, 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven, brother of Lord Mountbatten.

This unusual desk set was presumably given to the Countess de Torby by her husband soon after their marriage in San Remo, whilst staying on the Isle of Wight
