An important portrait of the artist, Vanessa Bell, whilst pregnant with Grant's only child, Angelica. The baby was born on Christmas Day, 1918 and this work dates from the autumn of that year. The sitter appears to be posing against the back of the Omega Signboard painted by Grant in 1915 and now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (See J. Collins, The Omega Workshops, London, 1983, illustrated in colour on the back jacket)

This portrait was only recently discovered transposed on the stretcher with a later oil 'The Corner of the Inn, Kings Lynn'
