Lot Essay

This model of the Arc de Triomphe and the Place de L'Etoile, Paris was probably completed between 1919-1921 as a design for the tomb of the Unknown Soldier (erected in 1920). Inspired by the idea advanced in the 1840's of transferring the ashes of Napoleon I to a vault beneath the Arc de Triomphe, this design is an elaborate tribute to the military successes of the Emperor with each momentous victory recorded. The statue of Napoleon I is a reduction of Charles-Emile-Marie Seurre's (d.1858) monumental figure commissioned by the Ministry of the Interior in 1831 to crown the Conne de la Grande Armeé in the Place Vendome and now in the Cour d'honneur des Invalides. The inscription of the radiating street names includes "Foch ou Bois de Boulogne", thus suggesting the date of this model.
