Lot Essay

A related commode, in the 'antique' manner with Pompeian 'tamed' lion-mask handles, paw-feet and nymph 'herm' pilasters was published in 1804 (ill. in Himmelheber, Deutsche Möbelvorlagen 1800-1900, Munich 1988, p.210.) Himmelheber (op.cit., p.116, fig. 314) also illustrates an 1815 design for a cabinet with nymph 'herms' accompanied by a tablet with confronted griffins in the 'antique' manner. However, the sturdy hairy paw feet, rich moulding, tamed lion-mask handles and nymph herms merit an attribution to the Stockholm cabinet-maker Israel Lindström (fl. 1810-1827), relating closely to his masterpiece design presented in 1810 (see: E. Andren, Snickare, Nordiska Museets Handlinge, no. 81, 1977, p.30).
