A SOUTH GERMAN WALNUT AND MARQUETRY LOW CUPBOARD with moulded rectangular top crossbanded in satinwood and stained fruitwood and centred by a "marbled wood" panel, the door inlaid with a gate with tower flanked by other buildings with castle walls on an ash ground and inscribed A.1530 N., the interior enclosing two drawers, the sides inlaid with classical ruins above panels inlaid with foliate scrolls on bun feet, three bun feet replaced, the panels circa 1530 and reused in the early 18th Century

Lot Essay

This antiquarian cabinet is composed of old marquetry panels from various sources. The theatric ruined courtyard scenes on the sides are inspired by engravings after designs by Hans Vredeman de Vres (d.1604) published in Variae Architecturae.., Antwerp c.1560. (S.
