A preparatory study for the intended, but never engraved, frontispiece of the third edition of Président Hénault's Nouvel Arbregé Chronologigue de l' Histoire de France contenant les évênements de notre histoire depuis Clovis jusqu'à la mort de Louis XIV published in 1749. This work ran into eleven editions during the lifetime of its author, the majority of these luxury productions were brought by subscription. In 1984 two leatherbound albums were offered in these Rooms containing respectively thirteen of the sixteen illustrations for the edition of 1746 and 22 of the 36 illustrations for the 1749 editions.
The present sheet was originally in the large collection of the artist's drawing assembled by Charles-Antoine Jombert (1712-1784) which amounted at the time of the sale in 1776 to 286 drawings. Although without Jombert's traditional green mount and related description, there can be no doubt that the present drawing is the one described by Jombert in his catalogue of 1770: 'M. Jombert was a publisher and bookseller. He was one of the earliest patrons and friends of Cochin who lived partly at his home before his trip to Italy.
President Charles-Jean-François Hénault (1685-1770) was one of the leading figures of the Salons. The son of a Fermier Général, he entered at an early age the Parlement de Paris. A friend and correspondent of Voltaire, Hénault was intimate with the Duchesse du Maine, Queen Marie Leczinska and Madame du Deffand. Although his books are no longer admired, the prestige he enjoyed during his lifetime made the commission to illustrate his book a most desirable one for a young artist
