Lot Essay

The artist may have studied under the van Spaendonck brothers. He exhibited flower and fruit pieces at the Paris Salon from 1822-9, and at Douai and Valenciennes circa 1836. On Redouté's death in 1840 he took over his post as Professor of botanical drawings at the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle. Drawings by Lesourd de Beauregard are rare, and none of his works show so clearly the influence of Redouté. A biography of the artist is included in E. Hardouin-Fugier, The Pupils of Redouté, Leigh-in-Sea, 1981, pp. 48-9
