Lot Essay

The figure types and the technique are inspired by drawings of Pieter Coecke van Aelst, such as the study for a tapestry in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, E. Brugerolles, Renaissance et Maniérisme dans les Ecoles du Nord, Paris, 1985, no. 48, illustrated.

Dr. Karel Boon tentatively advances an attribution to Matthias Gerung (circa 1500-1568/70) on the basis of a comparison with the artist's woodcuts (Hollstein X, nos. 1-77)
