On the left bank under the Holy Spirit stand the Protestant champions of Europe identified by initials: 'S' The Duke of Saxony,'H' William V Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel and 'GA' Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, behind them are ranged the major Protestant cities of Europe including Würzburg, Strasburg and Leipzig. They are opposed on the right by the Emperor Mathias, the Archduke Ferdinand, the Pope (Urban VIII?), two Jesuit fathers, a Cardinal and a priest (possibly Father Joseph, advisor to Cardinal Richelieu) with Rome, Vienna and Munich representing the Catholic cities of Europe under storm clouds. Lightning strikes the Castel Sant' Angelo

The Protestant Frederick Elector Palatine, together with the crown of Bohemia, stands in a storm battered ship in a channel between the two camps. Gustavus Adolphus tries to control the ship from the Protestant shore with a rope, whilst from the Catholic side the Emperor Mathias and the Archduke Ferdinand try to sieze the crown of Bohemia
