The sitter is probably Isabella Elliot, born circa 1750, eldest daughter of Sir Gilbert Elliot 3rd Bt. of Minto by Agnes Dalrymple-Murray-Kynynmound. Her eldest brother was Gilbert, 1st Earl of Minto (1751-1814) and her only sister Eleanor, married in 1776, William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland, who was the subject of a portrait herself by Gardner
