Lot Essay

The fair in Hyde Park was held on 1st August 1814 as part of the celebrations of the centenary of the House of Brunswick (or Hanover as it is now better known). Unlike further manifestations in Green Park and St. James's Park, Hyde Park had 'neither Tower nor Temple' but did have a fair with 'booths and shows in profusion, and the wide peopled magnificence of the Serpentine', on which was enacted a naval engagement between English and American forces, followed by fireworks (Gentleman's Magazine, August 1814).

A watercolour sketch for this work, differing considerably in detail and inscribed 'Jubilee Garden', is in the Guildhall Library
