Lot Essay

The reverse of the first drawing is prepared with grey chalk for transfer, and is a pen and ink outline drawing of the subject that Constable exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1830. The picture is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum (G. Reynolds, The Later Paintings and Drawing of John Constable, 1984, no. 29.41)
