Lot Essay

Mr Maberley was huntsman to the Surrey Foxhounds 1812-1820. Formerly coachbuilder to George III, Mr Maberley was a keen huntsman, and in 1812 became master of the Surrey Foxhounds. Maberley had a fiery temper and engaged in a fierce row with Colonel Hylton Joliffe, M.P. ex-Colonel of the Coldstream Guards and Master of the Merstham Hounds, the row concerned the digging of a fox, and was finally settled by drawing pistols on Alderstead Heath, both gentlemen firing wide!
