Lot Essay

The frieze with its scroll-entwined lozenge flanked by stylised x-shaped frets features in Thomas Chippendale's 1753 engraving for a sideboard table, illustrated in The Gentleman & Cabinet-maker's Director, London 1753, pl.LIX, while the bulbous acanthus enriched feet with their confronting C-scrolls and the panelled Gothick-style tapering legs relate to his design for another sideboard table (op.cit. pl.LVIII) and a writing-table (op.cit., pl.LXXIV).
