Lot Essay

Old Westminster Bridge, designed by Charles Labelye, was built between 1738 and 1749. Although in October 1746 the bridge was said to have been capable of taking vehicles, the fifth pier together with the fourth and fifth arches suddenly began to subside, and it was closed for reconstruction. It was finally re-opened on 18 November 1750.
