Lot Essay

This painting was probably painted in 1828, the year Miss Darnborough's grandfather died, or just before. The old Church was pulled down and a new one, 'Saint Andrew's' built in 1844-7. It is in the Neo-Norman style, with a west tower, pyramid roof, elaborate decoration inside and a Norman pulpit and reading desk. Pevsner records the architect as Andrew Salvin, and the label on the reverse records that it was built by William Rutson of Newby Kirke
