Lot Essay

The identification is made on the basis of the oil portrait of Sophia Burdett in a private collection, Bern, dated by Schiff to the last years of Fuseli's life, c. 1820-25 (S. 1506). Sophia Burdett (1794-1849) was the daughter of Sir Francis Burdett, the campaigner for electoral reform, and Sophia, the youngest daughter of Thomas Coutts, the banker and Fuseli's patron She married the Irish landowner Otway Cave in 1833. Nineteen letter from the octagenarian artist to Miss Burdett are now in the Zurich Kunsthaus. Alternatively, the drawing has been seen as a portrait of one of the Hess sisters, Marta and Magdalena (S. 573-9, 848-9)
